Since earning my master’s degree in guidance and counseling from Eastern Michigan University in 1986 and subsequently my doctoral degree in counseling and human services from University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1994, I’ve served organizational and regulatory bodies such as the North Carolina Board of Licensed Professional Counselors, Council for the Accreditation for Counseling and Educational Programs (CACREP), the Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development (AMCD), the American Counseling Association (ACA), and the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) in advisory capacities, collaborating with colleagues to develop and implement standards of practice. I’ve received numerous awards, such as American Counseling Association Fellow (2018) and the Robert O. Stripling Excellence in Standards (2019; Association for Counselor Education and Supervision).
